A pioneering artist and academic, Phyllida Barlow’s large scale sculptural installations are known for their innovative use of materials and sense of precariousness. With a long career in teaching, Barlow has also tutored several generations of students who are now distinguished artists. Barlow will be in conversation with Daniel Baumann about her prolific career in arts and education.
Phyllida Barlow was Professor of Fine Art at the Slade School of Art for over 30 years, stopping in 2009 to focus on her own work. She was elected a Royal Academician in 2011. Her recent solo exhibitions include RIG, Hauser & Wirth, London (2011); Cast, Kunstverein Nürnberg, Nuremberg, Germany (2011); STREET, BAWAG Contemporary, Vienna, Austria (2010). Recent group shows include Sculptural Acts, Haus der Kunst, Munich, Germany (2011) and Displaced Fractures, Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich, Switzerland (2010).
Daniel Baumann is an art historian, curator, and critic. He is the director of the Adolf Wölfli-Foundation, Museum of Fine Arts in Bern, Switzerland, the co-founder New Jersey, an exhibition space in Basel, Switzerland, and since 2004 he is curator of an ongoing exhibition series in Tbilisi, Georgia. Baumann will be co-curating the 56th Carnegie International 2013.
